Three would-be space pioneers live in close quarters, physically separated from the outside world yet subject to scrutiny and public surveillance, similar to what the first crewed mission to Mars will experience.
This project explores how architecture, through transparent materials, controlled views, interior-exterior relationships, and kinetic elements can simulate and start to mitigate the socio-psychological challenges that will come with interplanetary travel.
The house is imagined as a lightweight, temporary structure, meant to be quickly deployed and easily disassembled for re-use. It features an aluminum structural frame holding polycarbonate panels built on concrete foundations, with polycarbonate panelling for walls, windows, doors, and the roof.
Visit the Isolation Under Observation Models page to see physical interpretations of the same designs and the Isolation Under Observation Animation page for animated depictions of both model types.
